Practicalities of Organising a General Strike

26thJanConfTUC Congress in September 2012 passed a motion calling for co-ordinated national action up to and including a general strike. Merseyside Association of Trades Union Councils (MATUC) is organising a conference as a first step in taking forward this motion.

The conference will look at the practicalities of organising such by regional trade unions and branches, trade union councils and activists as part any national days of co-ordinated action called in 2013.

On 14 November 2012 millions of workers across Europe, particularly those in Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain, took united action against attacks on public services, jobs, wages and working conditions. We hope to learn from their experiences of taking united action. MATUC are inviting trade unionists from Spain and Portugal to the conference to provide us with practical examples of how they organised their action.

Speakers already confirmed include:* Steve Gillan, General Secretary POA* Kathy Taylor, President UCU

* John Hendy QC, co-author of the booklet “Days of Action” in which they detail the legal argument behind the right of trade unions to hold a general strike

* PCS General Secretary Mark Serwotka (or Assistant General Secretary Chris Baugh)

* Rob Williams, Chair NSSN

* Len McCluskey, Unite General Secretary

The conference is being supported by a number of trade unions (including RMT, ASLEF, PCS, UCU) and trade union councils. The conference will be chaired by Merseyside Association of Trades Councils President and NW TUCJCC representative, Alec McFadden.

The conference will include workshops looking at action in the public sector, action in the private sector and an international workshop.

The conference will take place in the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool on January 26, 2013 and a lunch will be provided. The conference is free to all trade unionists and activists; however MATUC are asking delegate’s branches to make a donation towards the cost of the conference.

Similarly, they are inviting trade unions and trade union councils to sponsor the conference and make a donation towards the costs. To make a donation please send a cheque made payable to MATUC and send it to Liz Epps, Secretary, MATUC, c/o Gale House, 4 St Anne Street, Birkenhead, Wirral, CH41 3JU.

You can register for the conference via the same address or email merseyadvice@btconnect.com marking your email Merseyside ‘Days of Action’ Conference.
