The Campaign Against Climate Change’s One Million Climate Jobs Caravan is to visit Bolton & Wigan Boroughs on the 21st & 22nd May respectively.
Leigh UNITE, GMATUCs and a number of Trades Councils are backing the Caravan financially and have offered to provide what other logistical support they can to local activists wanting to use the Caravan’s visit to promote investment in new green jobs in contrast to public sector cutbacks and the expansion of the potentially environmentally disastrous ‘fracking’ industry.
Based on the Million Climate Jobs Report, produced with the help of the CWU, PCS, TSSA and UCU unions, the national tour by the Caravan, which will now consist of two simultaneous Northern & Southern Legs, will highlight how creating ‘climate jobs’ can help us tackle the twin crises of the economy and climate change, put a million people into decent paid work and save us many hundreds of £billions if not £trillions in the process.
A first get together of everyone interested in being involved with the visit of the Climate Jobs Caravan to our area has been organised at Bolton Socialist Club on Saturday 24th March at 12.00-2.00pm. It would be great if a few of this Blog’s readers could make this meeting. The organisers apologise if it clashes with other things.
The meeting will be discussing such things as: i) Advance publicity and promotion of the Caravan’s visit to both Boroughs. ii) Where the Caravan might actually visit and be potentially situated on both days and what activities we might want to do when it is. iii) How we might maximise the involvement of local organisations who may be sympathetic to the One Million Climate Jobs Campaign in the day’s events and other follow on activity. Also the involvement of local MPs, Councillors (even Bolton & Wigan Councils). iv) The organisation of public meetings in both Boroughs prior, on the eve, on the day, or after the Caravan’s visit to promote the One Million Climate Jobs Campaign. v) Any other ideas people might come up with.
Since this is a non-partisan event and open to anyone who supports the One Million Climate Jobs Campaign’s proposals, the organisers are keen to stress it really doesn’t matter where you are coming from politically and you will be made very welcome.
