Wigan Borough Green Socialists – June 2012 – Forthcoming Events

Saturday 9th June – Rage Against Close Protection – Workfare Protest - St.John’s Methodist Church, Market Street, Hindley WN2 3AN 1.00pm -3.30pm.

They were bussed to London to act as stewards for the Queen’s Jubilee, told they would be paid for the work and cared for while in town. When they arrived, they were told they wouldn’t get paid and were made to strip down and change into uniforms in public, pitch tents in the rain, sleep under a bridge, and left without toilet facilities for 24 hours. They were told that if they didn’t accept this “training,” they wouldn’t be considered for work during the Olympics.

Protestors are meeting on the main road at the church as their offices are down a small side street, once we have assembled we shall make our way to their offices at 15 King Street.

Thursday 14th June – Wigan Borough Green Socialists Meeting – The White Lion Pub, Market Street Leigh (opp Leigh Parish Church) 7.30pm – 9.30pm (Re-arranged from the 12th and the Anvil Pub in Wigan)

We’ve had a poor attendance at several recent meetings. As a consequence, this meeting will provide an update to all members and supporters who may have become out of touch with us of late, concerning our plans for the next period up until the TUC called mass demonstration in London on the 20th October.

This will include in relation to progress concerning:

1) The One million climate jobs campaign & related issues
2) The Tastier Greener Wigan Pie Initiative
3) Wigan Diggers’ Festival
4) UNITE Community Membership
5) Wigan & Leigh Save Our NHS/KONP
6) Building for the 20th October TUC Demonstration
7) New meeting arrangements

Comrades can raise any other items they want to discuss at the meeting.

It would be great if all comrades could make a special effort to get to this meeting, as we could make some significant progress on all of the above fronts if more members and supporters could ‘muck in’.

Thursday 21st June – One Million Climate Jobs Caravan – Leigh Follow-Up Meeting, Leigh Labour Club, Abbey Street, Leigh 7.30pm – 9.30pm.

It was agreed by everyone at the evening meeting of the One Million Climate Jobs Caravan’s visit to Leigh on the 22nd May, that we should meet up again soon to discuss how we might take forward the one million climate jobs campaign in the Wigan Borough area.

Also, how we might link this up with opposition to the expansion of ‘fracking’ in the NW and the promise of lots of new jobs to go with it.

In addition to this, how we might link up both these thing with more immediately practical proposals and initiatives which might help local people in our area help themselves to build, better, healthier, greener and more sustainable communities to the extent that is possible under present conditions.

It was suggested this should include how we might support/promote any economically viable and environmentally sustainable co-operative and other social enterprise initiatives which might help local people address the comparative lack of both private sector investment in our area, and a period of prolonged austerity, whoever is in power at Westminster.

It was further agreed that we should seek to work together on a non-partisan basis in support of whatever proposals we finally agree on.
